Today is the age of Social Media

The times when your traffic was coming from Google alone are way long gone. Now you can create content and get tons of traffic from various Social Media Networks.

A report, published by Shareaholic in the beginning of this year, shows that 31.24% of overall traffic to sites in Q4 last year came from Social Media.

Around 500 million tweets appear every day on Twitter. There are almost 302 million active users. It is almost as much as the population of the USA.

Impressive Twitter stats, right? And that’s only one of the biggest Social Media Networks.

  • Facebook – 1,415,000,000
  • LinkedIn – 347,000,000
  • Google+ – 300,000,000
  • Twitter – 288,000,000

These numbers of active users in different Social Media Networks are based on Statista data, revealed in March 2015.

The shift from search to social isn’t just in progress: it’s already here (by BuzzFeed).

It is no wonder that after you publish any content, you share it via all possible channels, counting on tons of traffic after your shared content gets noticed.

The ideal scenario is when your content goes viral and spreads on and on without any effort from your side by rewteets, reshares and simply by a word of mouth. But despite numerous advice and tips on creating viral content, it is really, really hard to craft one.

There are 2 factors, seriously limiting your traffic amount from Social Media:

  • Click through rate and
  • The number of your followers

Click through rate

Click through rate is a way of measuring the success of an online advertising campaign for a particular website by the number of users that clicked on a specific link (from Wikipedia)

A study by Rand Fishkin from MOZ showed that an average click through rate of the links you share is only about 1%. Simply put, if you share your content in front of 1,000 followers of yours, only 10 of them will visit the content page.

Now these numbers don’t seem so delightful.

Plus there’s another limiting factor:

The number of your followers

It goes without saying, that if you share your content in front of a bigger audience, you will get more people to click the link inside your share.

That is why almost every Blogger is so obsessed with increasing the number of his or her followers. But if you only focus on your social media audience size, you will not be able to jump over your own head…

Now we’re getting to the most interesting part.

Engage your readers in sharing your content!

You do understand that you are not the only one to have some followers in Social Media Networks, right?

Your readers and visitors have their own audience. And if you get others to share your content, you will naturally transform a part of their audience into your visitors!

And you can get the most of this principle by embedding tweetable quotes in your content.

Tweetable quotes

Tweetable quotes are a small bite of text, which can be shared in Twitter alone from all the other content in your post. But! Regardless of what text will be tweeted, the tweet will have a link to your content page.

I will show you how tweetable quotes work.

Here’s an example of a tweetable quote box inside the post text

And here’s what happens when someone clicks a Tweet button

Tweet button

You see? Your quote is immediately ready to go to Twitter. In the tweet I have highlighted the quote text with yellow and the link to a post with blue, so that you could better understand the concept.

And when people on Twitter get curious about where this quote comes from or what does it relate to, they will click through the link and get to your site.

Isn’t that simple, yet smart enough?

You can use a pull quote, a fixed phrase, a cit from a celebrity or an influencer in your niche as a text of your tweetable quote. It may be your own sound bite or a sum up, you want to emphasize, which is able to rouse curiosity of the crowd on Twitter.

Who uses tweetable quotes?

One of the best examples of using tweetable quotes is demonstrated by Michael Hyatt. Here’s how it looks in one of his latest posts:

You can see numerous people sharing this particular quote on Twitter, linking back to the post itself.

That’s only a tiny part of the shares. You can easily check it yourself by searching the quote text in the Twitter search box.

There are lots of other blogs and sites, using the tweetable quotes strategy.

How can you make your own tweetable quotes?

Actually there are three ways:

  • a hard way
  • a simple way and
  • simple and awesome way

A hard way

Use a special link in order to make any part of your text quotable.

<a href=”http://twitter.com/home/?status=Ideas are easy. It’s the execution of ideas that really separates the sheep from the goats. -Sue Grafton (link)>Tweet this </a>

However this will not add any neat appearance or style to your content. Just a simple “Tweet this” link.

Actually it is easier to get the same kind of link at Clicktotweet.com website.

A simple way

There are several WordPress plugins, that can make some text tweetable and create simple quote boxes.

The most popular ones are Click to Tweet plugin by Todaymade and Better Click to Tweet plugin by Ben Meredith. They don’t have much customization options. And they only have a single box template. However they do their job perfectly well. They create nice tweetable quote boxes.

Influencers recommend

Here’s what happened for Kathryn Aragon, managing editor of The Daily Egg, when they switched to TweetDis from other click to tweet plugin:

“I’ve been using it for a few months now, and I’ve seen a significant rise in social shares as a result.

Prior to using this plugin, our average number of shares in Twitter was 87.4. After installing this plugin, the average is 107.8. That’s a 23% lift. Not bad for simply switching plugins.”

Neil Patel in three of his posts in a row recommends using TweetDis.

Now you see what tweetable quotes are, and how they bring you traffic just by engaging your readers in sharing your content. If you like this concept and find this post helpful, please share it with your friends and social media followers!
