2015 Social Media Facts

In 2015, social media is going to continue being as big a force in marketing as it ever has been. That being said, enough has changed since social media debuted that you’ll want to be smart about how you deploy it for the sake of marketing.

By looking at this infographic, it should be clear to see that while some of the rules have changed, the importance of social media hasn’t.

Social Media Is Everywhere

The global population right now is roughly 7.3 billion people. That’s a large number, to be sure, but the amount of social media users is catching up.

Currently, there are more than 3 billion people across the planet with access to the Internet, and 2.1 billion of them have social media accounts.

Hopefully, this makes it clear that you need social media to reach your users, or you’re going to be leaving a lot of business on the table.

Furthermore, 3.7 billion people own wireless devices.

Expect the gap between mobile device owners and social media users to close relatively soon. This is just one more reason you can’t put off social media as a marketing tool. More and more people are accessing the World Wide Web from the palm of their hands. If you can’t reach them there, you may never reach them again.

The Top Three You Must Make a Priority

While it should be clear that you want to make social media a priority, don’t make the mistake of thinking every account is worth an equal portion of your time.

The big three remain Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn. While others like Pinterest, Instagram, reddit and YouTube deserve your consideration, these three are the ones people focus on the most.

Facebook

For example, Facebook has more than 1.4 billion users at the moment.

That means over 60% of those with social media accounts are using Facebook. On average, each of these people has 200 friends and a quarter of those represent actual friendships (i.e., people they see in real life). As such, engaging someone on Facebook means potentially engaging others through real relationships.

Twitter

Just about a quarter of all Internet users have Twitter accounts. Every month, the site sees 288 million active users and, of those, 88% visit the site through their mobile device. 77% of all Twitters users live outside the U.S. too.

What does this tell you?

Twitter will help extend your global reach. The site’s users are incredibly active and they love using their mobile devices, a trend we touched on at the beginning.

LinkedIn

LinkedIn probably doesn’t get the credit it deserves as a social media site.

However, the site sees two brand new accounts every minute.

When it comes to the 30- to 64-year-old demographic, LinkedIn is their favorite site, but the college crowd is catching up.Right now, there are 39,000,000 accounts from this group. This means you cannot risk losing sight of how popular this platform is, especially if you want business from these important age ranges.

Take the time to go through this entire infographic as we cover other important social media channels as well. Although LinkedIn, Facebook and Twitter are the most important, which platform ends up working best for you and how you should use it will depend on your unique business.
